Guest SRS Posted December 5, 2016 Report Posted December 5, 2016 Our company specialises in Damp Proofing, but one of our Clients has asked us to complete the following: Provide combined intumescent strips and smoke seals Provide self-closers Provide seals to doors were there are none at this time Investigate and provide fire/smoke seals to electrical cupboards as required Provide cold smoke seals to various Provide upgrade of all flat entrance doors to ensure they have appropriate fire and smoke seals, closers and fire rated glass Provide smoke seals to main doors to stairwells as not fire rated/fire sealed and risk to communal evacuation in event of fire Ensure that self closing devices, intumescent strips and cold smoke seals are fitted to the flat entrance fire doors. Provide as necessary if not present This is not an extensive list. Some requirements differ from what is above, but the end result seems to be similar. We have a joiner who has complete similar works, but he did not need to be a registered fitter to complete. We are not FIRAS registered, or have any other qualification for Fire Safety fitting. With the above, do you think we would have to be registered, or request an inspector to investigate during and after the works? Quote
AnthonyB Posted December 6, 2016 Report Posted December 6, 2016 If you are purely a damp proofing firm then you shouldn't be messing with fire doors as the trades are not related. If you don't have competent trained staff with the correct tools and consumables then there is a big chance that you will not do it correctly and everyone looses in the long run. I've seen work by joiners that is abysmal and non compliant or using completely outdated techniques that go back to the 60's & 70's door standards and would want work to be done by an accredited specialist. Stick to what you are good at. Quote
