Guest AngharadW Posted January 10, 2014 Report Posted January 10, 2014 I'd like some advise on whether screwing a door sign into a fire door stops it being functioning fire door. Please advise. Thanks a lot for your help, Angharad Quote
Tom Sutton Posted January 10, 2014 Report Posted January 10, 2014 The screws would be very small and it would be unlikely to affect the fire resistance of the door. Quote
Guest Neil Ashdown Posted January 12, 2014 Report Posted January 12, 2014 HI, Tom is correct, usually the screws used to fix signage would be so small as to cause no problem. But you are correct to raise the issue because most fire resisting doors are made from naturally insulating timber. if you remove timber from a door to fit a concealed door closer, mortice lock, bolt through handles or in some cases hinges then you are replacing timber with metal which will conduct heat and may contribute to increased charring and thus early integrity failure of the door. In such cases there are intumescent protection kits available to retain the insulating properties of the fire door. You can find out more about fire doors at www.fdis.co.uk Neil. Btw. use of correct sinage is mandatory for fire and escape doors. Quote
Guest Safety Signs Express Posted January 17, 2014 Report Posted January 17, 2014 Hi In addition to Neil's statement use of correct signage is mandatory for fire and escape doors this is correct and all fire doors should have a Fire door keep shut notice fixed to either side of them at eye level. If in in doubt about using screws these signs are available in self adhesive. Quote
green-foam Posted January 17, 2014 Report Posted January 17, 2014 Safelincs supply a variety of signs, some of which are self adhesive. CLICK ME Quote
Guest Fire door with coat hooks Posted November 1, 2018 Report Posted November 1, 2018 Can I screw coat hooks to a fire door? Quote
Neil Ashdown MAFDI Posted November 1, 2018 Report Posted November 1, 2018 A coat hook fixed to a fire door using small gauge short screws would be OK. Quote
Guest Andy Posted February 6, 2020 Report Posted February 6, 2020 I work in a care home. We have a tea room with a plain fire door that i would like to make look more tea room like. Am i able to stick wood moulding to one side of the door? Would it need to be hardwood? My thinking at the moment is as long as it dosnt change the integrity of the door or interfere with it closing itll be fine. Is this right? Cheer Andy Quote
Tom Sutton Posted February 7, 2020 Report Posted February 7, 2020 I would agree providing you are not cutting into the door, adding mouldings, soft or hardwood, would be acceptable, providing you are not going to increase the surface spread of flame properties. Quote
Guest Jo Scott Posted February 23, 2021 Report Posted February 23, 2021 Whilst on the subject of screwing things to fire doors, would fitting access control magnetic locks (linked to the fire alarm system) to a fire door invalidate its certification? Quote
AnthonyB Posted February 24, 2021 Report Posted February 24, 2021 Possibly, especially if the bolts for the catch plate go straight through the door and out the other side - the door manufacturer should be consulted as to what they will permit. Quote

It depends on the door and the certification it has.if I had to say ‘generally’ it would be that maglocks using through-door fixings should not be fitted where avoidable and definitely not above a glazed aperture.
