Guest Carolinesh Posted September 12, 2013 Report Posted September 12, 2013 Hi I am need of some general advice please are polystyrene tiles legal? I realise if there was to be a fire that they would catch alight easily not to mention the toxic fumes they would give off? Are there any legal requirements these days? any advice is mucha appreciated... Quote
Tom Sutton Posted September 13, 2013 Report Posted September 13, 2013 The use of polystyrene tiles are legal but many authorities oppose their use because they can pose a surface spread of flame risk. It all depends on which tiles are used and how they are treated after they have been installed. There are two types, the old, which is not treated and the so called flame retarded type. How they are fixed to the substrate either using blobs of adhesive or the whole of the tile is covered. How they are decorated either using a non flammable covering (emulsion paint, etc) or a flammable covering. (oil based paint) Because it is difficult to control what happens after they have been installed, even if installed correctly, I personly believe they constitute an unnecessary risk and I would not use them.
